Yesterday, Nvidia, chip designer firm, published a work, which demonstrates how artificial intelligence AI-created graphics can be joined with a standard video game engine. The outcome is a hybrid visual system which one day could be utilized in movies, video games, and virtual reality.

“It’s a new way to render video content using deep learning,” Bryan Catanzaro, vice president of applied deep learning at Nvidia, told. “Obviously Nvidia cares a lot about generating graphics [and] we’re thinking about how AI is going to revolutionize the field.”

In a paper, the firm’s engineers tell how they create using many techniques that are already present, including pix2pix, which is a powerful open-source system. Their research integrates a kind of neural network that is called as a generative adversarial network or GAN. They are greatly utilized in image creation using AI, including the generation of an AI image freshly sold by Christie’s.

Nvidia has announced many innovations, and one invention of this research is the debut video game with AI-created graphics. It is an easy driving simulator in which players drive around some city blocks generated by AI, but can’t get out of their car or then communicate with the world. The video game demo is charged utilizing only one GPU – this is a prominent success for such ground-breaking work.

Nvidia’s system creates graphics by utilizing only some steps. First of all, the scholars have to obtain training information, and in this case, it was collected from open access datasets available for automatic driving research. The obtained footage is then segmented into different types: trees, sky, road, buildings, cars, and so on. A reproductive adversarial network is then trained using the segmented data to create new models of these items.

After that, engineers develop the fundamental topology of the simulated situation utilizing a standard game engine. In this research, the system was Unreal Engine 4, a famous engine utilized for titles like Gears of War 4, Fortnite, PUBG, and many more. Utilizing these situations as a platform, deep learning techniques then create the graphics separately for each type of object in real time, pasting them on the engine models of the game.

“The structure of the world is being created traditionally,” Catanzaro told, “the only thing the AI generates is the graphics.” He further said that the demo itself is fundamental, and has been connected by a single engineer. “It’s a proof-of-concept rather than a game that’s fun to play.”

This tech is still at the early stages, Catanzaro pointed out, and it will take almost decades for the AI-created graphics to come in consumer titles. He associated the situation with the making of ray tracing, which is the present hot method used for graphics rendered, in which separate light rays are created in real time to develop lifelike shadows, opacity, and reflections in simulated situations.

“The very first interactive ray tracing demo happened a long, long time ago, but we didn’t get it in games until just a few weeks ago,” he claimed.
